About Slow Food Detroit
In keeping with the spirit of the movement, Slow Food Detroit is committed to defend bio- diversity in our food supply, the preservation food traditions and commit to support the organizations various initiatives world wide.
On a local level our mission is to create a strong community that embraces the vision of a clean, fair, safe and accessible local food system. Our goal is to have Michigan lead the nation in agricultural diversity and be known internationally for its culinary arts.
In the past four years we have watched hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs disappear from our region and our agricultural communities face the same potential risks.
We are a community of contrast. Detroit is surrounded by affluent suburbs with infinite food choices and more master chefs per capita than any state in the country, but recently the city itself was labeled by a national study as food desert, where most residents have to procure their food from local gas stations or liquor stores.
It is our hope that through this website and varied events, that our convivium will be able to raise awareness of the importance preserving our region’s agricultural and culinary heritage and build a strong local food system that serves everybody.
Mostly importantly however, we are about having a good time and sharing great food and meeting a lot of interesting people. We hope you join us! |
